What Do I Need To Know To Become A Front End Web Designer?

Webdesign can be a lot of fun to learn, however it’s very time consuming. Different professionals go different directions… Linux based & Windows Based.
Linux is more of CGI, Python, Perl
Windows is more ASP, ASP.NET, .NET (which is how I design all my websites.. if it’s good enough for companies like Jaguar, it’s good enough for me)
There is also software.
You can learn stuff like FrontPage, Coolpage, LiquidFX, & you can be ridiculed by professionals.
Or you can use the industry standard which is Dreamweaver. It’s the best, hand’s down. Anyone whose been in the business on a professional level will tell you to go with Dreamweaver.
You need to know basic photo editing.
Fireworks, Photoshop, JASC & Corel, all provide great photoediting software. JASC for it’s money ($99) will work just fine for basic web editing.
So, from my standpoint if you know the following setup, people will be crawling to you…
ASP.NET
ASP 3.0
HTML 4.0
CGI / PERL
Python
Photoshop CS2
Dreamweaver 8

Learn basic HTML at http://pagetutor.com, then research on CSS. Then learn PHP or ASP & SQL. Afterwards, concentrate on Photoshop & Flash. If you have familiarized yourself with those, you would have a knowledge in graphics, server-side scripting, databases, & design.

as a trainee web designer i am currently still learning the basics but i find the more “design” programs you become accustomed to the better your chances of getting in as a web designer with a big company but too be honest its not as easy as people think, i have so far learnt frontpage & coolpage which are both at different levels of web designing as coolpage is basic whereas frontpage is more professional, but hey keep it going & hopefully yhou will become a great web designer which if like me is my dream

I got involved in website design about a month ago. I started thinking that I could find some programs that you can just drag and drop things where you would like. I quickly found out that was not the case.

I started learning basic CSS then how to slice and export my pages from Photoshop CS4. This alone helped me to create some descent sites for the little experience I had. Learning how to implement JavaScript files helped with photo galleries and slideshows which always helps brighten up any page. So my advice would be check out you tube for some CSS Tutorials, then tutorials for slicing and exporting from Photoshop into dreamweaver (which is what I used)
