You can try Microsoft Web Developer 2008, here is the link for that – http://www.microsoft.com/exPress/download/. You can find a lot of documentation & help through Microsoft.
take a look at http://www.WebStarts.com?aff=angelah
you can build Free website & if you not techy there are very short videos explaining how to do absolutely everything step by step. Absolutely fab
Google sites offers a pretty customizable design of webpages, with automatic navigation, fully customizable colors, with custom background images of webpage parts. All pages can have a sidebar of the width you choose, either at the left or at the right, with a possible link to site map, & with custom text.
Many templates with ready sets of pages typical for companies & businesses are there, or you can start from a scratch.
The interface is easy to use, you always know what you are doing & where.
A prominent feature is access management with you being able to give several people access to the website, you see recent site activity & can revert any action you do not like.
And, yes, it is free.
Your ideal is open source CMS web design software (Content Management System). The 3 most popular ones are Drupal, Joomla & WordPress. The advantage of a content management system is that it lets you edit your own site, create new pages, change images, etc. etc. online with no software to download & also it’s much simpler to add new functionality down the line (discussion forums, e-commerce facilities, etc.) The other good news is that these are all open source, i.e. free!
I would also encourage you to learn about SEO – Search Engine Optimization, which is the process of getting a website to appear high with Google & other search engines, otherwise you may have a great looking website, but no-one will visit it.
If you opt for Drupal (my personal favourite CMS) there’s a good end-user guide on: http://www.1websitedesigner.com/drupal-end-user-guide
Several hosts also offer an automated install of CMS using cPanel & something called Fantastico. You would still need to pay for hosting, but not for the software. You can see hosting recommendations on: http://www.1websitedesigner.com/professional-web-hosting
