Web Design Beginner

I am relatively new to web development & have begun to learn HTML & CSS as they are essential languages for web design. I also want to move into a bit of scripting i.e. JavaScript, PHP, ASP.NET & whatnot & have seen & read a bit about jQuery on various forums.
I know that it is a JavaScript library that can produce some pretty decent effects & functionality so I want to know, is it worth learning? I have seen a book on Amazon jQuery: Visual QuickStart guide & it has some good reviews & am thinking about getting it.
Is jQuery good in your opinion? & is it worth learning?

I was talking with my uncle, & he told me all about ROV operators, on offshore oil rigs, i.e Oilrig maintainence, & things like that. He told me it is a specialised skill, & I think I have the correct mind set for it. At the moment my plan is to go into Web Design & Animation. I am thinking of checking out ROV operation. I don’t know where to begin. Could anyone give me some pointers? I am from West Coast Scotland, & as far as I know one of the main training areas for ROV ‘Pilots?’ is in Fort William, which isnt far at all from where I currently live.
Where do I begin!?

Okay so I just starting looking & I am completely lost. I’m two & a half years out of high school & finally realized I do need to go to school. But I’m not sure what the heck I’m supposed to do. There are dozens of things that interest me so I’ve narrowed it down to four to begin with I suppose. I like to write but know I could use some english courses & know enough to know I should have a back up since most writers don’t make that much. So my second is web design, I’ve always wanted to learn how to create & run a website. Third & Fourth are Photography & Art. I want to learn to draw & paint. So which college or what site can I search to find a college that teaches all four of these.

Yes. I’m the dummy. There is so much information out here, it’s hard to figure out the best thing. I have no programming experience, & a small amount of web design experience mainly using Dreamweaver. I’d like to start an online community, with moderators, passwords, users, etc. I’d like a private forum for just the moderators. I’d like people to be able to search the forums, & NOT have avatars, but be able to use emoticons. I would like automatic passwords emailed if someone looses them, & control of design & setup. I’d like a small area for advertising on the side if necessary. I’d like user guidelines to be automatic when someone signs up & have them be able to have instant access when they verify their email address.
I’ve read about a lot of different software, & have NO idea where to begin. I need something EASY for me to set up & manage, but still be able to have a lot of the above features & maybe more if necessary. I’d like to have an online chat area where we can have meetings nightly if we’d like to. I’d like to have a blog area too for just the administrator or moderators.
There are a lot of hosting services with Free forum setup, but I have no idea how easy any of this is. I would obviously need support in the beginning
Also, is there a way to get the whole site semi complete & test it without making it live?
I’d like suggestions from anyone on the above & what their opinions are on the easiest & best software for all this for a newbie.

Hi, I’m just about to leave school & want to start my own business. I’ll start off at home over the summer as I’m returning o Sixth Form next year, but is there anything in particular I should know about. I understand about registering a business within the first couple of months so if it doesn’t work out then there’s no need to register it but, do I need to get a business bank account or can I just use my personal account to begin with.
By the way, I’m heading into the graphic design & web design/hosting areas & I understand how competitive these markets are but I have expeariance & am going to start with dead low rates to get the work.
Im also thinking about typing for local businesses, building & fixing PC’s & general computing for small business in need of help.

I have C++ knowledge & could easily expand from there. Where should I begin? Should I be designing web pages? What are the opportunities with computer knowledge? I have no idea where to begin. I would like to work at home. Where should I look. I am willing to start at the bottom & learn a new programming language. I just need a direction/starting point. What is the entry point for computers? I will learn as I go

I’ve essentially ignored this site because it is not working for a photography based site. I do not want cheesy templates nor do I want mynamephotography.webs.com. It’s unprofessional & does nothing for me. I’m going to be adding better photos to the new site & overall just working on making it shine.

I just recently became a Web Designer for a local business & at the Office we use Mac OS X 10.4. My home machine is running Windows Vista Home Edition 32-bit. I love working with Graphics & Web Design on Macs, it is really totally different. I have a very large hard drive (1 TB) & I’m sure I can easily run many operating systems on it. I also have an external hard drive (80 Gigs).
I have a copy of Mac OS X Leopard & want to install it on my Machine for a “Dual Boot” kind of operation, I have done some research & found this to be possible, but challenging. I am willing to take the risk. How can I go about doing this. I just need to know where to start. If I could find some step-by-step instructions that would be amazing.
If possible, can I install Macintosh on the External HD & Boot from there? If not, then I can install it on a 2nd Partition. How can I go about doing this? Where do I begin? I appreciate all the help. Thanks in advance.

I want to start a business which would be completely web based, but in the beginning will require a basic website & will NOT sell any products from the site. I am not a techie & the extend of my computer knowledge is in knowing how to check my e-mail. Is there any hope of me learning how to build my own website, & if so, where is the best place to get started?

I am currently in the process of ordering a large number of gadgets from china & plan to sell them online & at boot sales. I have ordered from china before & have no qualms with the importation process.
My query is, what do i need to do to ensure my business is legit. At the moment this is my brief business plan checklist type thing, in the order i aim to carry them out.
– Register business name
-Sell at boot sales, promoting my soon to be operating web site with leaflets.
– Open ebay shop & sell items on there too.
-Set up e-commerce site with a bespoke Professional web design team & purchase relevant Domains & begin to sell items on there.
My query is, if need be, where & how do i register my business for resale of items from china. I know i have to register the name of my business. And the products coming from china are patented & carry legitimate safety ISO standards. But what else do i need to do to ensure i am legally selling these products.
Any help would be appreciated.

I need to have a shopping cart for my graphic design site where you can purchase web design or flyers, business card etc..
I don’t need it free but at least in the beginning I do because I don’t have a lot of money for start up costs, I have seen a couple that let you have the program for free at first.
But how does it work when someone pays with their credit card? Do I need to get an account somewhere for that I would like it to be like any website where someone can just add items to their cart & check out paying with their credit card.

I am currently 17 years of age attending high school & will continue on to go to University to study I.T. Recently, I have started to strongly think about my future & what I want to become in the years to come.
I am very well educated with Computers, especially hardware. I took apart my first Desktop PC at the age of 14 & built my own Desktop computer from scratch at 16 (last year).
Now here is what I am currently aiming for. I want to be the person that works with the hardware side of I.T, preferrably for a company.
Really, any job in I.T will satisfy me aslong as its not web, graphics or software design/programming.

Background:
Recent Computational Engineering graduate from UCB. I had 5-6 CS classes 2-3 very difficult upper division courses. I have a strong theoretical knowledge & some working knowledge of software design. I feel like i could succeed in the Web 2 world, but i don’t have the experience or skills to get in the door. I have identified this market for the ability to get up & started on my own (business-wise). I relish the opportunity to be creative & i’m just looking for advice where to start. Which language should i begin my mastery… Javascript? ASP? Any book recommendations, & overall strategy for someone at my level. Eventually I would like to learn ruby & ajax, but i’m not sure its wise to just jump in with those…

I am writing to inform you of my talent in web development & singing in hopes that they can be of contribution to the Harvard campus. Enclosed are my National History Day champion website titled “Nixon’s 1972 Visit to China: Compromise across a 23-Year Ocean of Conflict” & a CD showcasing my singing.
My experience with web development extends back to seventh grade, when I sat in an advanced web development class at Washington University in St. Louis. In ninth grade, I enrolled in the class, not only receiving a solid A, but also gaining important hands-on experience with web design. From then on, I have designed many sites for local entities & school activities such as the school newspaper. I have even begun my own web firm (Cation Web Groups). This firm has designed websites for local restaurants & other facilities.
Recently, I won the National History Competition for my website on Nixon’s Visit to China out of over thousands of websites around the nation. Additionally enclosed are my process paper & bibliography for this historical project. The site’s design is controlled by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for efficient site management. DHTML is used to create interactivity on the site including the citations & the virtual tour of Nixon’s visit.
Collectively, I hope to extend this project on the Harvard campus in two major ways.
First of all, I intend to use my web design skills to further improve Harvard’s presence in the online community. I am aware that Harvard Website Development Services (WDS) produces high-quality websites for university departments & many other entities & look forward to possibly contributing to this organization. Furthermore, I hope to someday make an important contribution to the global online community, as did Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, who in fact attended Harvard University class of 2006.
Secondly, I hope to do further research into Sino-American relations at Harvard & promote Sino-American understanding. Today, the relationship between China & the United States is more important than ever. Not only are billions of dollars are annually exchanged between these two countries, but the Sino-American relationship is critical to global welfare. At Harvard, I hope promote understanding of Sino-American relations, possibly with the undergraduate group Harvard International Relations Council (IRC). I also hope to make a contribution to the Harvard Chinese Association.
In addition to my talent for web development, I have a strong talent for singing. For two years, I have been selected as one of the top six singers in St. Louis for Artists-in-Training (AIT), a vocal program through the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Last year, I won $800 for my solo baritone rendition at the AIT Spring Recital. In the community, I have organized & performed in many Chinese cultural shows such as the United States Department of Agriculture Diversity Day & the Families with Children from China annual picnic. At school, I am the bass section leader in chamber & show choir. Since freshmen year, I have received superior (I) ratings at both the District & Missouri State Solo Ensemble Festivals.
I am aware that the recently issued Arts Task Force Report makes a strong case for the arts at Harvard. Harvard also upholds a strong tradition for men’s quartets. Hence, I feel that Harvard would be a great place for my singing experience not only to grow, but also to contribute to the community.

I’m thinking of starting a classified website, but don’t know where to begin, should I hire someone to design it for me? Or can I do it myself, I’m no web master.

I’m in an English class which includes a lot of forensics (debate, learning how to argue, etc). I don’t want to get into what exactly it is we’re debating because I think that would affect the answers I get, but suffice it to say that everyone in class tends to agree with the author, & one of the professors.
Despite shamelessly promoting the point of view of the book (which I disagree with), the professor is a genius, especially when it comes to, well, arguing.
Case in point, today she asked everyone who had worked as a web designer to raise their hands in class today. Ive done a lot of back-end coding & programming, but I am no commercial arts student. So when she turned around & asked me a question which, by all rights, didnt have anything to do with web design, “as a web designer, why would you choose that picture & what message would you be trying to send with it”, I was caught off guard & couldn’t do more than “um..” & start to speak before other students, eager to “save” me, started to interrupt me & were finally called on.
Maybe it’s a little dishonest, but I thought what she did was brilliant. People pull tricks like that in the real world, & I’m in class to learn how to react when things like that happen. The thing is, I don’t really know where to begin.
I experience a lot of “esprit d’escelair”; I always know what to say about ten minutes after it would do me any good. The textbook we have for the class has a lot of info about presenting persuasive arguments in general, but nothing to cover defending one’s self in the kind of verbal sparring I encountered today.
I don’t want to be caught flat on my back again like I was today, & it’s a personal goal of mine to defend my point of view (and speak out about it in front of a class that’s terminally agreeing with eachother that’s bound to find what I have to say pretty disagreeable). I just don’t know where to get started. If I can do it here, I’ll be able to do it in the real world.

Im a print designer, but I have recently began to design website through evening courses & self learning. I have a website, its up & running. I made it in dreamweaver.
I have a contact me page, but when I test this by sending an email I do not get the page that says “Thank You for your email” etc.
Do I need PHP Script & how do I get it. Do I get it from my host
